Harvey’s Foundry Trust and EBC were pleased to welcome the first tranche of apprentices onto the Phase 3 build site on the 7th of September. The apprentices are being trained as part of a ground breaking project is being run by the Development Skills Academy (DSA).
Phase 3 is a £3.7 million project that will see the transformation of two listed buildings on the at risk register turning them into 18 high quality office unit’s creating over 80 new jobs in Hayle. The scheme is principally funded through the Heritage Lottery Funds grant scheme Heritage Enterprise.
DSA is in partnership with Working Skills Training Academy a department within Cornwall College has set up an onsite Training Academy to reintroduce the unemployed back into work with the appropriate training and skill set whilst working on a live construction site. This takes place over a 6 week rolling theory and practical course on construction trades where work placements will take place onsite and learners considered for full time work / apprenticeships.
EBC the contractors for the project welcomed 14 learners onto the site, this was then followed by a site visit where the learners could have a feel for what it would be like to work on a construction site. The 14 learners had a question and answering session at the end of the tour.
Following on from this the learners have been given the opportunity to take up work placements on site in October for a 10 day period which the learners will have the chance to work with EBC subcontractors on various different trades and hopefully create full time employment.
The programme will continue throughout the build of the project and hopefully see more learners gain work placements, Apprenticeships and full employment. This support will help to grow and keep a skilled workforce to meet the challenges of the modern world and current skill shortage that we are facing.
