The Goonvean Engine is a Grade II* Listed Cornish beam engine in its engine house situated on the Goonvean China Clay site near St Austell. It was built in 1863 by Harvey's & Co in Hayle.
The engine is one of a very small group of Cornish engines surviving in Cornwall and is the one currently most at risk of loss. The engine is a valuable piece of history relating not only to the Clay and China industry but to wider significance of Cornish mining and engineering.
Harvey's Foundry Trust, ING and The Prince's Regeneration Trust have formed a partnership to save this beam engine and bring it back to Hayle, The Goonvean Engine will be restored to a full working condition and placed in a new building on the Old Gas Works Site designed to allow full visitor access. This will provide a iconic gateway into Hayle as well as providing a stunning entrance to both the Harvey's Foundry Site and the harbour development.
No Cornish beam engine has been moved for at least 60 years and it is unlikely that one will be moved again for the foreseeable future. This will be a truly national event.
As this exciting project progresses we will provide updates through this website.
